The Farmers Marketplace started as a glimmer in the eye of a Placer County farmer whose desire was to create an efficient and profitable way for local farmers and artisan producers to market, sell and distribute their products while providing our community with convenient access to locally produced food. Also important was the education on the growing data and research on the benefits of eating seasonal, organic, non-GMO food. Educating the community on buying their primary foods locally from businesses that use regenerative and eco-conscious practices was paramount, while collectively growing a sustainable, local food system and economy.
It all began in July 2019 when I, along with co-farming colleagues, Dave & Danielle Kuder, launched the HUB as The Placer Farmers Marketplace. In Lincoln, CA. Initially, we had about twelve farmers and artisans involved. Every Thursday we would bring all of the products together, set up under canopies outside of the Citizen Vine Wine Bar in Lincoln, distributing pre-orders to our handful of loyal customers. Growth was slow and in November 2019, we were starting to question whether it was really worth the effort as the concept just didn't seem to be catching on.
Then Covid 19. Who knew that a pandemic would be the breakthrough we needed for our greater community to really start looking at and supporting local food resources? Our business gained some serious footing as we were considered an "essential" business, providing consistent access to safe, healthy, immune building and local food. This was a great relief to our farmers who had immediately lost all of their revenue from sales to local restaurants. We stepped up our game, tightened up operations to follow COVID guidelines, re-grouped by pre-packing orders to streamline safe customer pickups, now expanding our delivery service areas.
In November 2020, we expanded, opening our second pick up location and our Auburn HUB Headquarters at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, operating out of a 900 sq ft. building which provides a great space for aggregating all of the products from our producers, pre-packing orders, and loading for deliveries and transportation to our HUB pickup location in Lincoln.
The Auburn HUBstore, open every Thursday, 4 - 7pm, offers shelf-stable groceries, home goods and gift items. Thursdays is where our weekly efforts all come together for our customers who order Sunday-Tuesday at Midnight. We have a great staff team who have learned to carefully pack for both our loyal and our newest customers with a sensitivity to quality and detail that make our days both dynamic and worthwhile. We see the bounty, the harvest and the joy of local foods packed up, picked up and delivered to our community.
We have since changed our business name to The Farmers Marketplace, so as not to be confused with the wonderful outdoor farmers markets operated by Placer GROWN. These farmers markets were the foundation of our farm-to-table food movement and will always remain as a way to bring farmers and the community together. Our goal is that our online farmers market can provide a profitable, time-efficient way for our producers to distribute their products, giving our customers ease of access to fresh, local, seasonal grocery, garden and eco-lifestyle products in the most convenient way.
As we grow and move through many seasons, we continually introduce new local producers and products. We thoroughly vet all of our producers, ensuring that our farmers are using Non-GMO, organic, and regenerative practices and that our artisan producers source locally and use organic ingredients whenever feasible. All producers are encouraged to minimize the use of plastic in packaging, using compostable and recyclable packaging materials as much as possible.
Having been a farmer in Placer County for eight years, selling through a variety of markets, restaurants, food hubs and our own farm stand, I quickly learned that every time I was away from the farm soil, coop, orchards and garden beds, time spent sitting at markets selling my products, was time away from doing what I LOVE. For me, a food HUB was a great solution, allowing me to simply harvest to order and deliver my products. Today, when I hear our local farmers share their confidence in maintaining their farms while meeting the needs of the community, I know the HUB was the solution. As an innovative leader in the regenerative, agricultural community, she is dedicated to mentoring and nurturing relationships with local farmers and artisans. Tammi has deep roots in our community, advocating for collaboration in local food distribution channels while consulting with farm and property owners on ecological land management and design. Tammi’s bright, joyous spirit is felt in everything she does, with the many people at all stages of farming and producing that she inspires and mentors.
